What We Don’t: The receiver pairs really well with the speakers, but isn't the best available. What We Like: Superlative pairing, excellent sound quality and design. See the Monoprice HT-35 See the Denon AVR-S540BTīest High-End 5.1 Home Theater System 3. We do wish that Denon would improve the aesthetic design of their receivers – clearly a problem they share with Monoprice - but boring designs seem to be a trend in the home theater industry. This model feels like it brings the best out of the Monoprice speakers and, for under $400, it comes with an impressive range of features. Despite not having Dolby or DTS:X, the Denon AVR-S540BT receiver packs a real audio punch. The Monoprice HT-35 speaker set is quite basic, which means you don’t need to spend much money to power it. They look fantastic, and although the sound doesn’t quite have the detail we look for – the Onkyo HT-S3910 beats it here – the HT-35 speakers still deserve a spot on this list. One of our biggest complaints about that system was the lackluster appearance, so we were very pleased to see that the HT-35 speakers tackled this issue head-on. The Monoprice HT-35 is a complete redesign of their old 33309 system, which previously held this position on our list. What We Don't: Sound lacks detail and refinement. What We Like: A basic system with huge value, works well with the Denon receiver. See the ELAC Debut 2.0 5.1 See the Denon AVR-S750Hīest Budget 5.1 Home Theater System 2. And if you do want to spend less, it’s possible to go for the AVR-S740H, the predecessor to the receiver in question You could argue that the price could be a little bit lower, but it's not an argument we'd support – they already represent fantastic value. Together, the speaker package and the receiver play off one another beautifully, the amplifiers providing enough grunt to let the amazing F6.2 floorstanding speakers do their thing. ![]() In this case, we suggest going for the Denon AVR-S750H, which not only packs in all the great features found in its predecessor, the 740H, but also adds Dolby Atmos Height Virtualization and HDMI eARC functionality. Like most 5.1 packages, you'll need to buy a separate receiver. For most rooms, this is all you'll ever need. While it doesn't have the detailed sound quality of something like the more expensive KEF T305, below, it also feels a little bit more natural and engaging. The audio quality has huge dynamic range for the size of the speakers, with hard-hitting bass that makes you feel every kick, punch, and explosion. There's no question in our minds that the new Debut 2.0 system from ELAC fits the needs of just about everybody looking for a good 5.1 setup. What We Like: Easily the best system for most people, terrific sound, great value.
